montenegrin beverages
The most important autochtounous grape varieties in Montenegro:
Vranac and Krstac Vranac from Montenegro is a strong, fully bodied
wine, or as we say in Montenegro, wine for men. This wine has a
real southern temperament, with ruby color. It is usually blended
with Cabernet Sauvignon and Kratoshia to make the wines of unique
taste. This wine variety got a name by the black color of its
berry. This wine has a fruity smell where the aroma of cherry is
dominated, but one can also recognize the smell of blackberry as
well. The wine Vranac has a full and harmonic taste with the great
balance of high alcohol and natural fruit acids. This wine is
primarily dry, but it can also be semidry or semisweet based on the
region where the grapes are made. The wine has a deep ruby or deep
red color. It has a great harmony of tastes on sour (tannins),
sweet (alcohol and glycerin) and acids (wine acid). Specially
developed bouquet and great taste after aging of 5 to 6 years, make
this wine great accompanied of different meats. It is served on the
room temperature where its subtle bouquet and full harmonic taste
is developed. The reducing sugar in the case of semisweet wine
having around 20 grams per liter makes the wine very full and such
wine is recommended as a cocktail wine. The dry wine with the sugar
content up to 4 grams per liter after the aging makes the rich wine
bouquet, while its intensity primarily depends on the content of
acids in the wine, or its acidity or PH value. This wine is
typically tannic. After the aging, the tannins become softer and
less rough. Vranac is the wine great for the aging in bottles. As
the result of aging these wines develop specific bouquet of dry
plums, chocolate, green walnut, and an aroma of vanilla if the wine
had previous storage in high quality wooden barrels. On the other
hand, after the aging the sweet glycerin component becomes more
significant, and the color is changed. The wines made from Vranac
have very different characteristics if the wines are made in
different parts of Montenegro, and especially if the grapes are
coming from Dalmacia, Popova Fields from Herzegovina or Macedonia,
or even some other northern parts. The wine has the best
characteristics if the grapes are made where the real origin of
Vranac is-Montenegro. The Vranac is not a variety suitable for
northern regions according to the opinions of many experts. That is
because this variety can only rarely be technologically mature if
grown in north climate conditions. The features of wines depend on
the producer style, but also on the selection of the grape
varieties which are mixed with Vranac in the process of
vinification. The wines are best if they are made in Crmitza where
the origin of Vranac is or wine growing area of Cemovsko Polje,
operated by only large company 13.jul Plantae. Vranac is the wine
with many international and domestic awards (more than 500 golden
medals), with five gold medals from prestigious Monde Selection
from Brussels and the title of the World Champion from
International wine selection in Ljubljana. Krstac (White Krstac)
has origin in Montenegro, where the wine with a same name is
produced in the categories of dry premium and quality wine with
controlled geographic origin. The grape juice has 19 to 22% of
sugar, no color, and with 5 to grams per liter of acids. Its
randman is 65%. The wine is very potable, harmonic with very
specific variety taste and yellow green color. It has an aroma of
vineyard peach. The aroma is very sustainable over the time. This
wine is great with its unique style and recognition. Introduced
white grape varieties of Zupljanka and Rkaciteli which have a long
time spread in the Podgorica vine growing area make a great
combination with Krstac in order to have a wine which brings all
the good features of these varieties by preserving all variety
characteristics of White Krstac. The wine has alcohol content from
10.5 to 13 vol% and acids from 4.5 to 5.5 grams per liter. It has
an almost prefect balance between alcohol and acids with its total
content of acids of 5 to 5.5 grams per liter. That feature is
similar to continental white wines, but Krstac definitely kept his
uniqueness of Montenegro. Since it belongs to Mediterranean, this
wine has a reach extracts from 22 to 26 grams per liter, glycerol
from 7 to 9 grams per liter and stronger color which comes as a
variety characteristics if this wine, and not result of an
oxidation. The wine has a color of yellow straw
